Nottinghamshire PCT required an innovative way to increase awareness and understanding of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) amongst 30 – 45 year old women. Research revealed embarrassment in discussing contraception with doctors. Low levels of literacy amongst key target areas meant typical written information was innapropriate.
Our solution was to create ‘handbag-sized’ magazines designed and written in the style of popular women’s magazines – complete with a free nail file for added authenticity! The light-hearted style allowed us to deliver serious messages in a way which would engage the reader, also in line with National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines.
Post-project feedback showed positive reactions from both target groups and medical staff. The magazine has been used as a benchmark project for other PCTs considering the communication of LARC
